The Directorate of Small Savings was established in the year 1959 at Shillong (then capital of Assam) for the promotion of small savings schemes formulated and sponsored by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The Directorate is under the administrative control of the Finance Department, Government of Assam.
The Directorate was shifted to Guwahati along with other establishments of the Government of Assam, when the capital of the state was shifted to Dispur in 1973. Accordingly, Small Savings, Assam performed its promotional activities from rented buildings till 2005. In August 2005, the Directorate shifted to its current office at Kar Bhawan Complex (5th Floor), Ganeshguri, Guwahati-6 as per the direction of the Finance (Estt. B) Department, Government of Assam.
A full-fledged publicity cell of the Directorate was set up in 1985. Currently this key division is manned by one Publicity Officer and three Assistant Publicity officers.
