The Directorate of Small Savings was established in the year 1959 at Shillong (then capital of Assam) for the promotion of small savings schemes formulated and sponsored by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The Directorate is under the administrative control of the Finance Department, Government of Assam. The Directorate was shifted to Guwahati along with other establishments of the Government of Assam, when the capital of the state was shifted to Dispur in 1973. Accordingly, Small Savings, Assam performed its promotional activities from rented buildings till 2005.
